A watermark should not cost you the document
Watermarking is one of those jobs where the tool can quietly do more damage than the task warrants. Plenty of converters apply a mark by rasterising every page — turning your document into a stack of pictures with the watermark baked in. The stamp looks right, and everything underneath is now unselectable, unsearchable and invisible to screen readers. For a contract you are about to send out for review, that is a significant loss for a cosmetic change.
Here the watermark is drawn over the pages as additional content. The text, fonts, vector graphics and images already in the file are not touched at all, so the document that comes back is the one you put in, with a mark on top. It stays fully selectable and searchable, and the file size barely moves.
Text, or your own logo
A text watermark handles the common cases — CONFIDENTIAL, DRAFT, SAMPLE, a client name, a date — with a choice of font, size and colour. An image watermark takes a PNG or JPEG, so a company logo can sit in the corner of every page or faintly across the middle. A transparent PNG keeps its transparency, which is what makes a logo look placed rather than pasted onto a white rectangle.
Either can be centred, tiled across the whole page, or aligned to the top or bottom edge. Tiling is the harder one to remove and the right choice when the point of the watermark is to discourage redistribution; a single centred diagonal is the convention when the point is simply to say what the document is.
Getting the settings right
Opacity and rotation are the two settings almost nobody guesses correctly first time, which is why there is a live preview rather than a download-and-check loop. Between 15 and 30 per cent opacity is usually the sweet spot: unmistakably a marking, still possible to read the page through it. Around 45 degrees is conventional for a full-page stamp — it crosses the text at an angle that is awkward to crop away and obviously intentional.
You can also limit which pages are marked. Leave the page box blank to stamp everything, or
give a range like 1-3, 7 when only a cover page or a particular section needs
it. Everything runs on your own device, so the file is never uploaded, and the only mark on
the result is the one you chose to put there.

Somewhere between 15 and 30 per cent works for most documents: clearly visible as a marking, but faint enough to read the text through. Diagonal rotation at around 45 degrees is the convention for a full-page CONFIDENTIAL or DRAFT stamp, because it is hard to crop out and obviously deliberate.
Can this remove a watermark from a PDF? +
No, and that is deliberate. This tool only adds one. Removing a watermark from a document someone else marked is usually an attempt to strip an ownership or confidentiality notice, which is not something worth building.
Are my files uploaded to a server? +
No. The PDF and any logo you add are read inside your browser, and the stamped document is assembled there. Nothing is transmitted, which matters given that the documents people watermark are usually drafts and contracts they are about to share.
